What is a Book Slay? This is a book that has me all in my feelings. I'm talking about talking to the book, throwing the book across the room, and shedding a tear or two. It is a book so well written that I have to reach out to the author and let them know they did that!

What happens when the quiet professor meets the sexy dom?

You will need to excuse yourself after reading this here book. This book is the seriously sexy grown up version of 50 shades of grey. This is the story of Asa and Elise. Asa is a body guard/contract killer/dom who is bored out of his mind. He's looking to kill or get laid.  Elise is a professor off for a weekend to Chicago for a martial arts festival when she spies Asa at her hotel. They lock eyes. Later Asa finds Elise at a bar, they flirt and one thing leads to another where Asa promises to give her what she needs. One night turns into a weekend of sex, conversation, boundaries discovered and connection. I love a story  that causes me to feel or think a certain way I wasn't ready for. What I loved about this book is Elise. She is a woman on a mission to rediscover who she is. To make choices for herself that go against what her friends or society would want for her. She's defining her freedom to choose without having to settle for the bullshit. Asa is intrigued by Elise. She is a perfect submissive for him and he indulges her every whim. They have a whirlwind weekend together but neither one of them is ready to let go but they have to. Will Elise get out her head and allow Asa into her life? Will Asa submit to Elise? You have to Read This Book to find out.

The Guilded Ones by Namina Forna is my first book slay for 2021!  This book is magic! It’s a story of a young girl Deka coming of age and she just wants to belong, to be accepted. The only way to be accepted is to be found pure. On the day of her purity ceremony, her life changes as she is found to be not pure but a demon. This is her story of discovering who she is and what it’s like to be free.  There were so many moments in this book that made me mad, made me cheer for these for poor girls who had been brainwashed into what equates to servitude. You cheer when they ban together and persevere. I was hooked from the beginning. Namina Forna wrote pure magic! Check out my YouTube channel for my full book review so you can truly understand how amazing this book is.

Where do I even begin to unpack this story? Do I start where 8-year-old Lavender is raped by her uncle? Do I start with the contrast of what would Jesus do vs the church? Do I start with insecurity? The violence. Malcom X once said the most disrespected person in America is the Black Woman. This book right here had me all in my feelings, made me think about the church and being a Christian woman, and it made me mad as hell. I have never hated every single character in a book, NEVER! The story is about Lavender who at 8 years old is touched by her uncle and she eventually get pregnant by him at 13. She is sent to a home for pregnant girls where she is talked into keeping her baby instead of giving it up for adoption (problem #2034). She has the baby and knows instantly she is not ready to be a mom, so she leaves the baby and runs away. She runs right into trouble as she bums a ride to Vegas where she eventually is turned out to be a prostitute. My heart breaks for her. This book is DRAMA! This book is about forgiveness, church people, addiction, sin and love. This book was engaging, tragic, funny at times, thought provoking and off the chain. This book is EVERYTHING and you should read this book.
