My top books of 2022

My book goal this year was 125 books and I'm proud to say I made it. It was challenging this year as I did not finish a lot of books this year. I decided that this year I would not suffer reading a book if it did not grab my attention by the first 3 chapters or when my Kindle said I had read 20% of the book. I'm so glad I did that as it freed me up to make my goal. Here are my top books for 2022.

Takeover by Evelyn Sola is a enemies to friends and single dad romance. Tara was poised to takeover her family business when Ethan sweeps in and "steals" it from her. What you get with this story is plenty of drama, humor, and lots of sexy moments. I loved that Ethan was a little savage in the bedroom and Tara's instant love for his son.

Mail Order Groom by A.N. Boyden was an unsuspecting surprise as this was my first book by her. Nina thought she was corresponding with a wall street type of dude when she requested a mail order groom. What she got was a tattooed ex con who throws her world off kilter. I absolutely loved the story concept and it didn't disappoint. This story had humor but also challenges how we see ourselves and others.

Carwrecked by Francesca Penn had me hooked from page 1. Celeste was literally running for her life when she washed up on the beach and emerged in front of a stunned Beau. Beau has been wallowing in grief when this Goddess emerges and changes his life. This story is emotional and will have you cursing. It does contains scenes of domestic violence so if that is a trigger for you - do not read this story otherwise please enjoy how two people who needed saving saved each other.

Voices and Visions by LaShell Collins is a romantic suspense series starring Detective Isaac Taylor. Imagine being a detective who is possibly psyche and has touch issues. I know what you're thinking - What the hell? That's exactly why you should read this book. I was intrigued and then hooked on the series.

Personal by Alexandria House is the book of 2022 for me. This story follows Armand Daniels who is a baller for the St. Louis Cyclones and Ella McClain daughter of rapper Big South (read the McClain series to get their back stories). Armand is a hot tempered baller who just needs someone to care about him. Ella is a model who is fed up with dealing with her ex's fans and just want to live her life. Ella and Armand both needed each other. This book did not go where I thought it was going. It was sexy and heart wrenching. This is book 3 in the St. Louis Cyclones series but can be read as a stand alone.

Sigma by Tiya Rayne is a continuation of the Alpha series. Sigma is anti everything about this mission with his brothers. He does not care to interact or participate until he inadvertently finds his mate Shiloh badly beaten and barely clinging to life. His mission changes to healing and protecting her. What I loved about this book was Sigma's awakening and his fierceness to protect Shiloh as trouble seemed to find her at every turn.

These are my picks for 2022. If you've read them or this post inspires you to drop some words in the comments and let me know your thoughts.

How to land in Facebook jail

Book Friends! I am in Facebook jail or what I like to call purgatory. Why? I'm glad you asked. Let me give you some context. I was reading this book All To Me by Ashantay Keys. A character in the book was so disgusting I made a comment that I wanted to throat punch him. Well, the good people at Facebook deemed that to a be a threat to a person and banned me for 30 days. It was an innocent comment about a CHARACTER!

I get it right, they didn't know it was about a character because a human did not review the post. However, it's very upsetting to be blocked from community. Yes, my book group is my community and I interact with them everyday. Not being able to post sucks! Not being able to connect sucks! So let me spare you some angst and anger with these tips.

1. Do not make any type of comment that could be construed as violent or bullying.
2. Do not use naughty words like F$uck and etc. that's deemed sexually suggestive content.
3. Do not use hate speech.

I know you're wondering,  well damn what can I post? In theory you can post what you want but just know if it goes against their content standards they will come after you and you receive numerous violations they can shut down your account or your group. I didn't even know I had "multiple" violations for seemingly simple meme posts or comments hence the 30 day moratorium.  So book friends watch your words and the things that you post because big brother is watching!

I went on a trip to Dare!

Picture
I recently went on a trip to find the only African American owned bookstore in Orlando. I've lived here for many years and was quite surprised to find that this store has been in existence for 10 years and I had no idea. I set out to find this store and to get a good book (I know like I need more books). Dare Books is owned by the very humble Desmond Reid who has been in the book business for over thirty years. First, it was easy to find as it is off of a main road. Second, the store is bigger on the inside than how it appears from the parking lot. Inside it is broken up into different genres but most of the titles are African American, Afrocentric, and Hispanic. We had a wonderful discussion about the store and the titles he carries (he has a lot of books y’all), the state of the book business and small independently owned book stores. He not only owns the store but he is a publisher as well and is on the brink of closing shop. I was sad to hear that he might be closing the store as soon as next year. As you can imagine it is hard to compete with the likes of Amazon and Barnes & Noble. However, there is a very simple solution. We need to support small businesses with our dollars and our social media capital. The fact of the matter is most small businesses need our support to not only survive but to thrive. Go visit Dare Books, buy a book or two and most importantly tell your friends and family. I plan on going back and will be hosting an event there in the near future. Let's support small business and all things books.

Dare Books is located at 245 N Highway 17-92, Longwood, FL 32750.

I am an avid book reader and lover of all things romance. I love books that make me feel, have bad ass female leads, assassins and of course alpha males. Don't forget to support your local library.
